The honor students in Mrs. Shanna Harrelson’s second period class assist Ms. Amy Schumacher’s students, the Self-contained Exceptional Children’s class at West Bladen High School, in their science lab work and understanding of different science concepts.

This week the class learned the parts of the flower. Schumacher’s students were amazed that there were so many parts of a flower that had names and that actually had specific functions. They learned about pollination, and how all living things are made of cells.

The first lab was to take apart a flower and identify their parts. The second part of the lab was to build a plant cell, complete with the nucleus, the chloroplasts, the cytoplasm, the cell wall and cell membrane. The students were amazed that all living things were comprised of millions of cells, plants, animals and even themselves.

Through the Four County Electric Bright Ideas grant that Mrs. Harrelson and Ms. Schumacher won this year the students have the lab supplies needed as well as all documentation and the lessons.

“We are so grateful for this grant and for the opportunity to teach the Exceptional Children the science concepts to meet curriculum. I personally am so grateful to Ms. Harrelson and her honor students and how hard they work with my students. They show compassion, understanding and empathy and its a beautiful thing to witness in a high school setting where “image” can sometimes shadow how students treat one another,” said Schumacher.
