White Lake Board of Commissioners met Tuesday evening via Zoom.  As a monthly update on the lake water quality, Dr. Diane Lauritsen provided maps showing the number of confined animal feed operations around NC 53 which seem to indicate why there are nutrients in the rainfall at the Lake.  Additional information and data are available on the website at https://whitelakewatch.com.

In administrative matters, the Board approved August Utility releases ($1,220.81), Tax releases ($463.13), Tax Refunds ($147.79); approved Prison Labor Contract for 2019-20; established special revenue fund for NCORR funds; adopted budget ordinance amendments; adopted the Bladen-Columbus-Robeson Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan; and authorized resolution for Wastewater System Merger/Consolidation Study with Town of Elizabethtown.

NCDOT District Engineer Kenneth Clark provided an update on the demolition/construction of the Hwy 701 north and south bound bridges.  An October 20th start date for the construction of the new bridge will bring about a phased approach whereby most of the new bridge is built over where the northbound bridge currently stands.  Once this phase is complete, traffic will be moved to the new structure and the old southbound bridge will be demolished.  The final phase will then be to complete construction of the new bridge to provide the ultimate typical section which will be a four-lane roadway divided by a raised median located on a single structure. The new bridge will have 8’ shoulders between the edge of travel and the bridge rail to accommodate bicycles.  The completion date for the work is May 1, 2024.

The Board adjourned the meeting tonight to an in-person meeting on September 24th at 2:45 p.m. for the purpose of going into closed session for personnel matters.
