A staff report The North Carolina State Beta Convention, a gathering of some of the brightest and most talented young minds in the state, took place in Greensboro this past weekend. Among the attendees were 58 members of the East Bladen High School Beta Club, a group that left an indelible mark on the event with their exceptional performances and unwavering commitment to the club’s mission. Mission of the Beta Club The Beta Club is more than just an academic club; it’s a platform that encourages students to strive for excellence, foster leadership skills, and engage in meaningful community service. The dedication of its members at East Bladen High School was on full display as they showcased their talents across various divisions at the State Convention. Scholarship Achievement: Jair McElvenn One of the convention’s highlights was Jair McElvenn, the 2023 NC State Beta Club President, receiving the prestigious Hannah Leitner Scholarship worth $2000. This recognition acknowledges academic excellence and underscores the importance of community involvement and leadership displayed by Jair McElvenn. Dominating in Apparel Design East Bladen High School Beta Club’s excellence was evident as they secured 1st place in the Apparel Design category. Their skills and creativity in this division truly set them apart from the competition. Impressive Group Talent and Show Choir Performances In the Group Talent Large category, the club secured a remarkable 2nd place, highlighting their collective talent and teamwork. Additionally, their Show Choir performance earned them a respectable 5th place, showcasing their dedication to both individual and group endeavors. Outstanding Performances in Variety and Art The Solo, Duo, Trio Variety category saw East Bladen High School Beta Club members Danyelle Cotten, Macey Potter, and Bella Robinson clinch 1st place with their exceptional performance, leaving a lasting impression on the judges and audience. In the Woodworking Division I, Jaxon Hair’s skill and precision earned the club a well-deserved 2nd place. Ruby Stephens showcased her artistic talent by securing 1st place in the Mixed Media Division I, while Claire DeVane’s Digital Art entry took 3rd place in the same division. Photography and Music Excellence The club’s artistic prowess extended to photography as well, with Jamiyah Peterson earning 1st place in Black and White Photography Division I. In the field of Musicology, Grady Starling, Ruby Stephens, Jan Alvarez, and Niyah Wooten collectively achieved an impressive 5th place. Marketing and Communications Success The club’s diversity and versatility were further highlighted by their 4th place finish in the Marketing and Communications category. Ta’Mani Brown, Ruby Stephens, Niyah Wooten, Ge Real May, and Tyliah Freeman displayed their prowess in this field, contributing to the overall success of the club. Creative Onsite Drawing and Golden Tickets Claire DeVane once again demonstrated her artistic talent by securing 2nd place in the Onsite Drawing category. Moreover, several club members earned coveted Golden Tickets, an achievement that reflects their exceptional abilities and potential. Danyelle Cotten, Macey Potter, Bella Robinson, Jamiee Perkins, Jair McElveen, and Ashtyn Fell were recognized for their outstanding talents, ranging from singing to dancing.
