Thursday afternoon was a perfect time for a trip to the library for a special book reading. There were 32 children and 21 adults in attendance at the Book Reading event hosted by the Bladen County Public Library and Elizabethtown Police Department.

Elizabethtown Police Chief Kip Hester said, “I have been noticing the library reading time and I thought it would be a good idea for them (the children) to get familiar with us.”

Hester worked with Ms. Susan Guyton at the Bladen County Public Library to get everything arranged.

Hester said, “We need to start at this age with children so they aren’t afraid of us and know we are here to help them.”

The children showed up with laughs, giggles and excitement. Guyton told the children, “We have some special people that have come to talk with you today.”

Hester explained to the children how glad he was to see them and that the Police are problem solvers.

He said, “We want you all to know if we can help you in anyway you can come let us know and we will help you.

Officer Eric Buffkin, with Elizabethtown Police Department read “Big Mike’s Police Car” written by Leslie McGuire at the Bladen County Public Library.

Children made crafts and toured the police car while the officers explained when to call 9-1-1. Frisbees, pencils and stickers were also given out to each child from the local service men.

Hester said they plan on being engaged with the children on a regular basis. Their plans include more events at the library and day care centers.
