On April 6th, the Elizabethtown community gathered in a grand show of solidarity at the Elizabethtown Fire Department for a heartfelt cause. The Benefit Ride for Randy Jones, a courageous firefighter who sustained severe burns while on duty, embarked at 10:30 a.m. from 300 East Broad Street, marking a day of unity and support for a brave volunteer firefighter.

The event, open to everyone willing to ride for a cause, set a modest registration fee of $20 for single riders and $10 for second riders. This collective effort ensured that every penny raised went directly to aid Randy Jones and his family during a period of overwhelming adversity. A BBQ chicken plate sale further kindled the spirit of the community, each plate adding $10 to the fund while offering attendees a chance to enjoy a delicious meal together.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department’s social media pages later buzzed with gratitude, acknowledging the overwhelming success of the weekend’s fundraiser. They issued heartfelt thanks to the Blue Shepherds Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club for their pivotal role in organizing the bike ride, and the vendors whose contributions of food, plates, and utensils played a significant part in the event’s success.

Sling Shaw, moved by his admiration for Randy, initiated a GoFundMe campaign to bolster the support for Randy. The fundraiser drew attention to the severity of Randy’s condition, emphasizing the long recovery journey that lay ahead after the tragic accident on November 15, 2023, that left him with third-degree burns.

Known for his quiet presence at local events and fundraisers, like the Shriner’s Fish Fry, Randy has been a familiar face in Elizabethtown since joining the fire department in 2012. His dedication extends beyond his service as a firefighter; he is also a valued employee at Giorgio’s Restaurant and is often seen biking or walking around town.

The fundraiser was a poignant reminder of Randy’s impact on the community. The numerous firefighters from across the county and members of the Bladen County Firefighters’ Association who came together to cook and prepare food were heralded as the unsung heroes of the successful event.

The Benefit Ride for Randy Jones and the subsequent expressions of gratitude highlighted the tight-knit nature of first responders, a community that comes together in times of need. The event raised funds and bolstered the collective morale, sending a powerful message of unwavering support to a man who has given so much to the town he calls home.
