A Staff Report

In the face of Maui’s devastating wildfires that have dominated headlines for nearly a month, the Elizabethtown Rotary Club has emerged as a beacon of hope by assisting one of the nation’s deadliest wildfire-stricken regions.

Since the fires erupted on the Hawaiian island of Maui on August 8, they have wrought unprecedented destruction, leveling thousands of homes and commercial buildings. These deadly wildfires have tragically become the deadliest natural disaster in the state’s history, with officials confirming 115 fatalities. The catastrophic fires have also consumed more than 2,200 structures, estimated to be worth a staggering $5.5 billion, as the Pacific Disaster Center and the Federal Emergency Management Agency reported.

In response to this catastrophic situation, Maui County officials have initiated a lawsuit alleging “intentional and malicious” mismanagement of power lines by Hawaiian Electric, the state’s leading utility. They claim that the power company’s failure to power down their electrical equipment, despite warnings from the National Weather Service on August 7, allowed flames to ignite dry fuel, including grass and brush, thereby causing the wildfires. In its defense, Hawaiian Electric denies these allegations and expresses disappointment that “the County of Maui rushed to court even before completing its own investigation.”

Though some wildfires continue to smolder in parts of Maui, the worst of the disaster appears to be over. At this juncture, visiting West Maui is discouraged. However, there are numerous avenues through which individuals and organizations can extend their support.

Michael Leinwand, representing the Elizabethtown Rotary Club, confirmed the club’s donation to the Honolulu Community Action Program. This initiative stands in solidarity with the people of Maui, pledging unwavering support for the island’s recovery efforts.

For those looking to make a difference, The Salvation Army has been on the front lines during emergencies, offering a crucial lifeline. Donating funds allows for the precise delivery of essential relief supplies to communities in need. Those interested in contributing can do so by visiting the website at Hawaii.SalvationArmy.org. While making online donations, please be aware that a small processing fee applies.

Text-to-Give is also an option for those who prefer this method. By texting HAWAIIFIRE to 51555, you will be directed to a secure donation form.

Additionally, individuals can send check donations to the following address, making sure to indicate “disaster relief” on the check:
