Last week, thirteen young students from Bladen County took their first steps towards becoming pilots or pursuing careers in the aviation industry through the Ace Academy held at Curtis Brown Airfield. Organized by the Town of Elizabethtown, this week-long day camp provided 6th through 8th-grade students with an immersive experience exploring various aspects of aviation.
Participants were introduced to aircraft design, equipment, flight dynamics, and the impact of weather, gaining insights into potential careers within the field. Hands-on activities included using flight simulators and navigating drones through obstacle courses, offering practical exposure to aviation technologies.
The Academy concluded with a unique opportunity to watch the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) from Fort Liberty, conduct pre-jump operations in preparation for a jump into White Lake. This firsthand experience provided students with a unique perspective on aviation operations, enhancing their understanding and enthusiasm.
The highlight of the Academy was an orientation demonstration where students boarded a small plane, many experiencing their first flight. This activity marked a significant milestone for aspiring aviators, igniting their passion and interest in pursuing future careers as licensed pilots.
“The Ace Academy was designed to build awareness and interest in the aviation industry as a viable career path for Bladen County students,” remarked Rusty Worley, Elizabethtown Planner. “We are thrilled to see the enthusiasm and engagement from participants, especially with the recent announcement of a major airplane manufacturer coming to the Elizabethtown Industrial Park.”
The Academy was made possible through generous sponsorship from the North Carolina Division of Aviation, Sovereign Aerospace, and Campbell Oil Company, highlighting their commitment to fostering educational opportunities in aviation.
