The famous Elwell Ferry in Bladen County is closed until further notice, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

In an announcement this morning, Ms. Faye M. Boyne, with the NCDOT, stated, “The Elwell Ferry is closed indefinitely. As of today, we have it closed through December 2020.”

The department may report more in December about the local ferry, according to Boyne.

The Elwell Ferry has been in service across the Cape Fear River since 1905, according to the North Carolina Historical Marker Program. The ferry is among the last of inland river ferries once common in eastern N.C.

The ferry is located on NC 53 at SR 1730 on Elwell Ferry Road, northwest of Kelly.

NCDOT announced this week NCDOT’s revenue decline due to COVID-19 depleted the NCDOT cash reserve and is now below the statutorily mandated cash floor of $293 million. This decline directly impacts N.C. highway construction and maintenance. Yesterday BladenOnline.com reported the 701 bridge construction in Elizabethtown has also been affected due to the revenue decline due to COVID-19.
