FAYETTEVILLE – Cape Fear Valley’s expanded adult Emergency Department is set to open Friday, Dec. 11, with more beds and significant layout changes. The most noticeable change will be different entry and exit points for patients.

The former Children’s Emergency Department entrance adjacent to the current adult Emergency Department entrance will become the primary adult ED entrance. As a result, the current adult ED entrance will become an exit. The switch is to better accommodate ED patient flow and security for Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

The new layout includes a new triage area and 17 additional ED beds, located immediately behind the new entrance area. Five beds will be for patients with lesser illnesses and injuries who can be treated and released quicker. The remaining 12 will be multi-purpose beds for more serious conditions.

The ED parking lot has also undergone changes to improve patient access. A new ticket booth has been placed at the lot’s main entrance. In addition, security personnel will begin patrolling the lot to ensure motorists are using lot spaces for official ED business.
