In a remarkable gesture of community spirit and philanthropy, the families of the Beth Israel Synagogue presented a gift to the Bladen Community College Foundation at the Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, February 27th. This generous contribution stems from the sale of their cherished synagogue property, reflecting a deep commitment to preserving the legacy of their shared heritage.
Ricky Leinwand, the driving force behind this decision, ensured that Bladen Community College became the recipient of this transformative gift. It will fuel several key initiatives designed to
enrich both the college and the broader community on Jewish culture traditions.
The funds will support a capital fundraising campaign for the renovation and naming of the college’s auditorium stage, creating a space that honors the heritage and culture of the Beth
Israel Synagogue families. Furthermore, the donation will sponsor a Jewish cultural art series, celebrating Jewish authors, music, and films. This series will serve as a vibrant tribute to the rich cultural tapestry of the Jewish community and will be open to the entire Bladen County community.
Established in 1935, Leinwand’s has been a cherished institution in Elizabethtown for 88 years, symbolizing not just a family business but also a testament to the enduring Jewish culture in
southeastern North Carolina.
“We may be the only Jewish family in town, but we certainly don’t just keep to ourselves,” said Ricky Leinwand. “We’re taking whatever we have from the synagogue and pumping it right back into our community; that’s what we’ve always done. This community made us, and we became successful because of it.”
Bladen Community College President, Dr. Amanda Lee, expressed deep gratitude for the transformative gift, stating, “This remarkable donation from the Beth Israel Synagogue families
demonstrates the power of community and shared heritage. The impact of this generosity will be felt for generations, creating educational opportunities and fostering cultural understanding. We are profoundly thankful for this partnership and the positive change it will bring to our college and community.”
Bladen Community College and the entire community eagerly anticipate the positive transformations that will result from this heartfelt gift. For more information about the college and
