The White Lake Police Department reported a Greensboro man pulled a gun on a police officer and a Camp Clearwater manager Monday afternoon. The incident escalated to a chase through Bladen and Sampson counties.
According to the police report, the suspect is 60 years old, Richard Wayne Roof of Greensboro. A verbal dispute about a porch being built on a campsite occurred between a Camp Clearwater manager and Roof. Around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, the camp manager called the police.
Then Roof is alleged to have pulled a gun on a White Lake Police Officer and the manager. No shots were fired, but Roof led the authorities on a chase through Bladen and Sampson Counties.
Roof was eventually captured by law enforcement using stop sticks and placed under a $100,000 bond. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, assault by pointing a gun, and fleeing to elude arrest.
White Lake Police Chief, Bruce Smith said, “We thank God no one got hurt. It could have been a lot worse.”
The case is still under investigation.
