In a touching display of support and compassion, the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office was recently presented with a hand-painted portrait of their fallen officer, Dewayne Charles Hester. The emotional moment unfolded as Ms. Hancock from Project Compassion of Manti, Utah, graciously donated the beautiful artwork to the family of Officer Hester. This heartwarming gesture provides a meaningful tribute to a true hero.

Officer Dewayne Hester made the ultimate sacrifice while on duty, responding to an assault in-progress call on that fateful day of June 8, 2012. In the line of duty, he lost his life in a vehicle collision, leaving a legacy of selfless service and dedication to his community.

Before joining the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Hester had already proven his commitment to upholding the law during his four-year tenure with the Elizabethtown Police Department. His devotion to his duties earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and residents.

The news of Officer Hester’s passing sent shockwaves through the tight-knit law enforcement community and profoundly affected the lives of his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, two children, his mother, and two brothers, who have had to navigate the painful journey of moving forward without his physical presence.

In times of loss, gestures like the one offered by Ms. Hancock and Project Compassion provide a glimmer of hope and support for those left behind. The hand-painted portrait of Officer Hester serves as a touching reminder of his impact on the community and the lives he touched during his service.

Project Compassion’s dedication to honoring fallen heroes and supporting their families shines through in their thoughtful contributions. Thirteen years ago, Hancock embarked on a profound journey of painting fallen soldiers, coinciding with the Iraq war’s beginning. Her efforts have garnered national recognition because her portfolio showcases over 1,645 touching portrayals of fallen military members and police officers. Each work of art is a tribute to these brave souls in Project Compassion.

In collaboration with three other talented artists within her nonprofit organization, heropaintings.com, they have collectively created over 3,000 heartfelt portraits. When asked about her artistic mission, Hancock humbly expressed, “This I do for compassion,” emphasizing the deep emotional connection driving her work.

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office ceremony, where the portrait was presented to Officer Hester’s family, was bitter-sweet. Such acts of kindness and compassion exemplify the power of unity during grief.

As we reflect on the life and service of Officer Hester, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers around the world who put their lives on the line daily to protect and serve their communities. The portrait presented by Project Compassion is not just a painting; it represents a profound gratitude for the dedication of all those in uniform.

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and the wider community extend their heartfelt thanks to Ms. Hancock and Project Compassion for their thoughtful gesture. The portrait of Officer Hester will serve as a cherished memento for his family.
