Here are the programs scheduled for January 2023 at Jones Lake State Park.

The park is located at 4117 NC 242 North, Elizabethtown. For information about the programs, call 910-588-4550.

FIRST DAY HIKE
Jan. 1, 2 p.m.

Join a park ranger and start the new year learning about the geological mysteries of the Carolina Bays. Formation theories and the natural communities associated with the Carolina bays will be discussed. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park visitor center at 2 p.m. The event is free of charge and open to the public.

BLACK BEAR
Jan. 7, 10 a.m.

Join a park ranger for a discussion about Jones Lake’s largest mammal … the black bear. Learn about the biology and habits of the king of the forest. Participants should meet at the Jones Lake State Park visitor center at 10 a.m. The program is free of charge and open to the public.

COMPASS COURSE
Jan. 21, 2 p.m.

Join a park ranger for a discussion about the basic use of a compass. After learning the basic use, participants will practice their skills on the Jones Lake Compass Course. The program is free of charge and open to the public.

SNAKES
Jan. 28, 2 p.m.

Ever wonder what snakes’ species are at home in eastern North Carolina? Which ones are venomous? Join a park ranger at the Visitor Center in exploring the various snakes in this area and the other unique species found throughout the park. The program is free of charge and open to the public.
