Ken Wadell

State Rep. Ken Waddell announced Monday morning that he won’t seek a third term in the House. The Democrat from Chadbourn represents District 46, which includes a part of Bladen County in the Bladenboro area as well as a portion of Robeson County and all of Columbus County.

“After much consideration for my family, I have decided I will not seek to serve the citizens of the 46th District for a 3rd term in the N.C. House of Representatives,” Waddell wrote on his Facebook page. “The extraordinary requirements of time, money, and commitment to service will not allow me to spend the necessary time required to do the job at a level I consider a personal requirement and further my farming interests while continuing to support my family.

“I have enjoyed the privilege to serve the citizens of this district as well as those of my hometown of Chadbourn for the last 28 years. It has been an honor to serve each of you and I wish you the best as you continue to deal with the ordinary and extraordinary requirements of daily living.

“It is my hope and prayer that the people elect a person who will put the interests of the ordinary citizens ahead of personal gain as they seek to be of service to the district. I also hope that one day I will see a N.C. that recognizes that all citizens regardless of race or economic status are allowed the opportunities for success that I was given. I fully intend to complete my term of service and will continue to address the concerns of any and all citizens in the district.”

Brenden Jones, a Republican from Tabor City, announced last summer that he planned to run again for the District 46 seat. He lost to Waddell in 2014, but received 47 percent of the vote.
