Spread the love

By Cheryl Thurston

Welcome to a very exciting August for all the sky watchers in Bladen County. This month we have many reasons to lift our eyes up to the heavens and one of them happens only once in a blue moon. What is it? It’s an actual Blue Moon which will also be a Super Moon. A Super Moon happens when the moon is at its closest proximity to the Earth, causing the moon to appear larger. A Blue Moon occurs when a single month has more than one full moon. The first full moon of the month happened in the early morning of August 1st, and the second will occur in the early morning of August 31st.

If that were not enough reason to look up, we will also be able to view 2 meteor showers, as well as a naked-eye view of the planet Saturn. The Delta Aquarids meteor shower peaked during the last week of July but shooting stars will still be visible for a few more days. The annual Perseids meteor shower will peak in the early morning hours of August 13th, and will be easy to view due to the darkness of the New Moon. The planet Saturn will be visible this week very close to the moon and by mid-month it will be visible in the western sky from dusk till dawn. This will be great for those night owls and early risers alike. Enjoy.

Now, to get to the point of this posting, the fine folks over at the Bladen County Health Department have posted the results of the sanitation inspections they conducted in July. Check out the list below to view those results and keep your chin up. If you happen to see a shooting star, make a wish. As always, Bon Appetite!
