Arts education may be an area in which many people don’t believe it’s that important. However, we have some educators right here in Bladen County who are trying to change that.

Thanks to those educators, our District is becoming pretty influential in the world of Arts Education in North Carolina.

Whitney Hern, art teacher at Elizabethtown Primary School, is the current North Carolina Art Educators Association Elementary Division Chair and Organization President-Elect hopeful. With this opportunity, she hopes to further push for southeastern NC representation in events and decisions made across our state. Mrs. Hern shared with us some of the recent accomplishments of two inspiring educators.

On October 24th, Mrs. Priscilla Braboy, principal at Elizabethtown Primary School, was chosen as the recipient of the Friends of Arts I award at the annual state conference in Winston Salem. This award is presented to a principal or district supervisor in recognition of their exceptional support of the arts in their schools and districts.

Theressa Lewis of Tarheel Middle School was selected as a Region 4 Coordinator. Over the next two years, she will work to provide professional development for our teachers in this region and serve as a voting member on the Board of Directors. Mrs. Lewis is a veteran teacher who will bring her expertise to a talented board of educators, working to support arts education in North Carolina.

Congratulations and thank you for your support and dedication to Arts Education in our state and schools.
