Lumberton, NC – August started really well for one local nonprofit. With the local community, county commissioners, city council members, and United Way representatives in attendance on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, a vibrant ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the new premises of Lumber River United Way (LRUW). The event also served as the official launch of their 2023 campaign, setting the stage for a year of impactful community support.

The historic downtown location for the LRUW headquarters was the epicenter of attention during the ceremony. Notably, the event marked a fresh start for the organization and symbolized the collaborative efforts that have brought them to this momentous juncture.

Dr. Cathy Gantz said, “We have had the support of so many dignitaries.”

In October 2020, the board of directors for Lumber River United Way approved the establishment of a regional United Way encompassing three counties. Gantz elaborated on how the nonprofit has expanded its reach to serve Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson Counties. “Our mission is to bring together individuals, nonprofits, businesses, and government partners, advocating for the well-being, education, and financial security of every individual throughout Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson Counties.”

The inauguration of the new office will serve as a hub to streamline and address community needs effectively.

Tate Johnson, Executive Director of Lumber River United Way, emphasized the community’s support in the venture. The restoration of the building, costing $140,000, was made possible through generous contributions from various financial backers. Importantly, these funds were secured independently of the previous year’s annual campaign, underscoring LRUW’s innovative approach to resource management. Johnson and Gantz thanked the City of Lumberton and the Cannon Foundation for their contributions. Additionally, United Way Worldwide provided an essential $10,000 IT grant that bolstered LRUW’s technological capabilities.

Johnson further revealed that due to the city’s favorable lease agreement for the next 15 years, at a nominal fee of $1 per annum, LRUW stands to save approximately $180,000, which can be reinvested into the community.

Lumberton Mayor Bruce Davis noted the effectiveness of repurposing the building, reflecting on the city’s ongoing investments in revitalizing downtown Lumberton.

Dr. Gantz said, “A big thank you to every community member elected official, board member, donor, and volunteer who took the time to join LRUW staff for the ribbon cutting and the 2023 Campain Kick-off Luncheon.”

After lunch was served, Johnson, joined by children from Camp Exploration, concluded the event by ceremoniously cutting the ribbon.

Gantz reminded supporters that pledge cards are in the mail, and volunteers are needed and accepted. “I am counting on all three counties reaching their highest summit in LRUW’s history by giving back to our communities through volunteering and financial support.”

She added, “LRUW is about servant leadership, a desire to serve and give to our communities and friends. We are asking that citizens of Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson Counties join us in putting the needs of others first.”

LRUW has over 35 years of raising funds and supporting causes. Some of the programs United Way supports are as follows:

• American Red Cross, Sandhills Chapter
• Communities in Schools
• Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library
• Empty Stocking Fund in Bladen and Robeson Counties
• 4-H in Bladen, Hoke, and Robeson Counties
• Southeastern Family Violence Center
• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program

Gantz said, “These diverse entities and programs are made possible because of donors like you. If you or your place of business would like to partner with United Way’s 2023 Campaign, please get in touch with our Executive Director, Tat Johnson.”
