An anonymous tip to law enforcement led to the arrest of three people in October on charges related to growing marijuana inside a residence in Kelly, Bladen County Sheriff James McVicker said Tuesday.

Charged with manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of manufacturing a controlled substance were Ciara Gutierrez, 22, of Sebastian Zea, 23, both of the 4000 block of N.C. 11 in Kelly, and 26-year-old Daniel Giraldo of Cullowhee. Bond was set for each at $100,000.

Acting on tip, members of the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit went to the mobile home in Kelly for a “knock and talk,” McVicker said. When someone answered the door, officers could smell a strong odor of marijuana, McVicker said.

Officers were allowed to search the home and seized 13.6 pounds of marijuana along with several firearms and all the equipment used for the indoor grow operation, according to the sheriff.

“This was a good arrest and it was made possible by a concerned citizen who reported the suspicious activity to my deputies,” McVicker said. “Acting on this information, they did their investigation and were able to shut down this indoor grow operation. When we receive credible information we are going to act on it. I would encourage anyone who suspects illegal activity somewhere to call the Sheriff’s Office.”
