Morgan Sweeney

Bladenboro native Morgan Sweeney drove in the tying run and scored the winning run Tuesday to give her Newberry College Lady Wolves an 8-7 nine-inning victory over Southern Wesleyan and a sweep of their non-conference double-header.

Southern Wesleyan scored in the top of the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. As part of the tie-breaker rule for extra innings, Newberry’s Maude McCourry was placed at second base in the bottom of the inning.

After a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, Sweeney pinch-hit and delivered a single to right field that scored McCourry with the tying run. After a walk, Nicolette Myers belted a single to right-centerfield, and Sweeney raced home with the winning run.

Sweeney batted 1-3 in Tuesday’s first game as the Lady Wolves rolled to a 9-1 five-inning victory. The West Bladen grad beat out an infield hit to start the second inning, stole second base, moved up on a wild pitch and darted home on Myranda Dills’ single.

Sweeney raised her batting average to .316 with the 2-4 day, now has 18 hits and has scored 13 runs.

Newberry improved to 15-7 with the victory and will host Alderson Broaddus (WV) Saturday in a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
