Shooting its highest score of the season Mountain View High School edged out West Bladen AJROTC 970.7 to 956.1 in the 2023 National Air Rifle New Shooter League.

Mountain View High School, which won its second consecutive game, was led by Katelynne Maitland who shot a 258.3. The Stafford, Virginia-based team is 3-1 and ranked 19th in the New Shooter League.

West Bladen AJROTC had its two-game win streak snapped, although the team shot it’s highest score of the season. West Bladen AJROTC was led by Sarah Hash, who shot a 251.1. The remaining team scoring members were Tonya Wilson (238), Marissa Taylor (237.9), and John Hundley (229.1). Other shooters for West Bladen AJROTC were Ashley Resindez (228.2), Ariana Toledo (207.4), Jeremy Martin (202.9) and Lauren Hammonds (141.5).

West Bladen AJROTC, now 2-1 and ranked 29th, will face Concordia Lutheran AJROTC of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in its next match.

These two teams are competing in the National Air Rifle “New Shooter” League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league exclusive to athletes in their first year of competition. Teams are from high schools and junior rifle clubs throughout the United States. Over 10 weeks each team competes in 8 games. Each week, each team is paired with another team with a near equal skill level.

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
