Steven Pfaff, NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist shared an update at approximately 8:30 this morning, January 21st. Read the information from Pfaff below:

“Here are a few updates regarding today’s winter weather event. Do not get lulled into a sense of complacency – conditions will be deteriorating during the afternoon and tonight.

  • Freezing temperatures have begun pushing southward across the Lumberton, Elizabethtown, and Wilmington areas.
  • However, fortunately, the initial round of precipitation has shifted off the coast while only remaining spotty/light along coastal Cape Fear areas as of 8:30am.
  • There is high confidence that another round of precipitation will begin to overspread the area, especially this afternoon.
  • The second round of precipitation will interact with the cold temperatures resulting in a more pronounced area of freezing rain during the afternoon and evening, and eventually some sleet and snow. Please refer to the animated gif of a model depiction along the lines of our latest thinking. Do not focus on the exact times, but the overall trend.
  • As a result, the timing of the most impactful conditions is focused on this afternoon and tonight.
  • The most recent freezing rain accumulation graphic has been attached showing a considerable swath of icing from portions of Horry County northeastward into Pender and southeastern Pender County.
  • There also could be more snow impacts, generally along and west of I-95 where 1-2 inches of snow accumulation is possible. The expected snowfall graphic has been attached as well.”
