New North Carolina laws come into effect every new year. 2023 is no different. While some may seem insignificant to most, others can have a significant impact on life here in North Carolina. Here are a few of the laws going into effect this new year.

A new state law that will limit the NC governor’s powers during an emergency.

  • The NC State Governor will have to get permission from a majority of the Council of the State to extend the declaration beyond 30 days, or it expires. The General Assembly would have to pass a law for the declaration to go beyond 60 days.

The state individual income tax rate will drop from 4.99% to 4.75%. It is set to drop even further to 3.99% by 2026.

North Carolina’s fuel tax, currently 38.5 cents per gallon (one of the highest in the country), will go up to 40.5 cents per gallon.
