WASHINGTON – As a recognized pro-life leader on Capitol Hill, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) today helped pass the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act (H.R. 7), of which he was an original co-sponsor.

The 1975 Hyde Amendment prohibits taxpayer funding for abortion and is estimated to have saved 2 million lives.  However, Obamacare ignores the Hyde Amendment and uses tax dollars as subsidies for insurance policies which offer abortion services.  H.R. 7 would make the Hyde Amendment government-wide policy and ensure future federal programs don’t support abortion.

“Just a few weeks ago, my family was blessed with the arrival of a beautiful baby girl.  Our 10th grandchild!  If you’ve ever held a newborn, so defenseless and completely dependent on you, you’ll understand why the idea that some people advocate for the murder of little babies is unconscionable,” said Congressman Pittenger during formal House debate on H.R. 7.

“Unfortunately, Obamacare ignores the Hyde Amendment and uses your tax dollars as subsidies for insurance policies which offer abortion services.  Therefore, I urge my colleagues to join me in support of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act, which will make the Hyde Amendment government-wide policy and ensure future government programs don’t support abortion with your tax dollars.”

Following the debate, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 7 by a bipartisan vote of 238-183.
