From March 17th through the 19th, Southern Farm Days was hosted by Cape Fear Farm Heritage Association at Lake Waccamaw at the Boys and Girls Horse House Complex. With this being the second year since the pandemic that the organization has been able to have the event, they had a fantastic turnout.

At 11 o’clock Saturday morning, the event had a bid on different antique items and wares; you could hear the offers being shouted as you walked to the area where the festivities were located.

With craft vendors and food trucks, there were people everywhere. Robert Mills, the coordinator, stated that they hoped for a huge turnout; the fundraiser was a big success.

The Southern Days had live cowboys out at the event cooking on fire with cast iron pans and vendors selling antique items and craft pieces. The event had a vendor whose business is called Fancy Firewood, owned by Emile Chagnon and Arlene Mutkus. Chagnon and Mutkus did chainsaw wood carvings at the event and sold what they made. The showcase of vendors ranged from the Organic Underworld Worm Castings to Shipwrecked Seasonings & Coffee.

The organizers also had various food trucks and vendors, such as Brenda’s Touch, Dixieland Kettle Corn Co., Miss Sherry’s on the Go, and so much more! Ranging from ice cream, sandwiches, Italian ice, sweets, and desserts, to plates of food that could be a whole meal.

The event even had antique motor mobiles from different times in the 1900s. They had old trucks, cars, mustangs, corvettes, and Volkswagen. During the day, you could watch a tractor pull or go to the petting zoo with baby goats, bunnies, chickens, and a pony.

Around two o’clock pm, they started the tractor parade, where tractor enthusiast lined up their tractors and showed them off to everyone at the event.

Even though the day started out as rainy and cold, you could tell everyone was enjoying themselves with the constant chatter of excitement from the people as you walked by. You could see kids playing with bubbles or playing at the petting zoo. You walked by couples looking to buy different wares from vendors, and overall, everyone was having fun.

The Southern Farm Days allows the Cape Fear Farm Heritage Association to display each element of its mission. The organizers stated, “It is also our joy to give back to our community. Proceeds from the Southern Farm Days show help to support the Lake Waccamaw Girls & Boys Home.”
