1914 – 181 die in coal mine collapse in Eccles, West Virginia.

1919 – First jump with US Army Air Corps (rip-cord type) parachute is made by Les Irvin.

1928 – RCA and GE install three test television sets in homes in Schenectady, New York, allowing trials of inventor E.F.W. Alexananderson’s first home television receiver which was a poor and unsteady 1.5 square inch picture that was received by radio transmitter.

1931 – Program for women athletes approved for 1932 Olympics track and field.

1934 – President Franklin Roosevelt signs Home Owners Loan Act.

1937 – First commercial flight across the Pacific operated by Pan Am Airlines.

1940 – Glenn Miller records “Pennsylvania 6-5000.”

1944 – “Exercise Tiger” ends with 749 US soldiers dead in D-Day rehearsal after their convoy ships were attacked by German torpedo boats off Slapton Sands, Devon.

1952 – Dwight D. Eisenhower resigns as Supreme Commander of NATO.

1957 – WSOC-TV channel 9 in Charlotte (ABC) begins broadcasting.

1961 – Milwaukee Braves’ future Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn throws his second career no-hitter at age 41, beating the San Francisco Giants 1-0 at County Stadium.

1966 – 38th Academy Awards: “The Sound of Music”, Julie Christie and Lee Marvin win.

1967 – The Douglas Aircraft Company behind schedule with deliveries of the DC-8 and DC-9 and close to bankruptcy agrees to merge with the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation to form McDonnell Douglas.

1977 – American defense employee Christopher John Boyce convicted of selling secrets to the Soviet Union.

1985 – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela sets record of 41 scoreless innings to start season.

1987 – National Basketball Association announces expansion to Charlotte and Miami in 1988 and Minnesota and Orlando in 1989.

1997 – “Jekyll & Hyde” opens at Plymouth Theater in New York City.

2003 – Andre Agassi recaptures the world Number 1 ranking to become the oldest top-ranked male at 33 years, 13 days in the history of the Association of Tennis Professionals rankings.

2011 – NFL Draft: Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is the first pick by the Carolina Panthers.

2019 – Disney says Marvel film “Avenger: Endgame” made an estimated $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the first film to make more than $1 billion on opening.

2021 – President Joe Biden makes a major speech to a joint session of Congress calling for a new era of government spending.
