1910 – Rayon first commercially produced in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania.

1918 – Robert Ripley begins his “Believe It or Not” column in the New York Globe.

1922 – Theressa Vaughn, 24, confesses in court in Sheffield, England, to being married 61 times over 5 years in 50 cities in three countries.

1933 – President Franklin Roosevelt created the Electric Home & Farm Authority (EHFA) to assist low income households with purchases of major appliances.

1941 – US Office of Censorship created to control information pertaining to World War II.

1948 – 8th largest snowfall in New York City history at 15.3 inches.

1955 – Carl Perkins records “Blue Suede Shoes” for Sun Records at Memphis Recording Service studio.

1971 – CBS airs “Homecoming” at Barrymore Theater in New York City for 97 performances.

1972 – Apollo 17 (last of Apollo Moon landing series) returns to earth, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, southeast of Samoa.

1976 – Piper Cherokee plane crashes into Baltimore Memorial Stadium stands 10 minutes after Colts lose 40-14 to Pittsburgh Steelers. No one seriously hurt.

1979 – “Kramer vs Kramer,” directed by Robert Benton and starring Dustin Hoffman and Merly Streep, is released. It wins Best Picture in 1980.

1984 – Scotty Bowman wins his 691st regular season game, the most wins by any coach in NHL history.

1986 – OPEC reaches an accord that would cut production by 7 percent for the first six months of 1987 and would raise prices immediately toward a target world oil price of $18 per barrel.

1994 – Rolls Royce announces its future cars will feature V12 engines which will be produced by BMW.

1998 – House of Representatives votes to impeach President Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky scandal, forwarding the articles of impeachment to the Senate for a trial.

2010 – “Miracle at the New Meadowlands.” Philadelphia Eagles trail New Orleans by 21 points with eight minutes to play before scoring 4 touchdowns in the final 7 minutes, including a dramatic walk-off punt return for a touchdown by DeSean Johnson.

2016 – Electoral college votes 304 to 227 to nominate Donald Trump for president over the objections of seven faithless electors.

2022 – Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rugge formally apologies for past actions of the Dutch state to enslaved people in the past.

2022 – House January 6 committee votes to refer criminal charges to the Justice Department for Donald Trump for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and encourage a mob to attack at the Capitol.
