1861 – Congress authorizes paper money.

1898 – Spanish-American War: Spaniards surrender to United States forces at Santiago de Cuba.

1902 – The Baltimore Orioles forfeit to the St. Louis Cardinals having only five players available to play before forfeiting the franchise back to the American League.

1919 – New York Yankees 21 hits, St. Louis Browns 17 hits … Browns win 7-6 in 17th inning on a squeeze play.

1935 – “Variety” publishes famous headline “Sticks Nix Hick Pix” for a story about small-town movie houses not wanting films with rural themes.

1938 – Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan leaves New York flying for Los Angeles and winds up in Ireland supposedly by mistake.

1944 – WWII: Port Chicago Disaster – explosion during munition loading kills 322 people and injures nearly 400, destroys three ships and a pier at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in Port Chicago, California which inspired the Port Chicago Mutiny later that summer.

1954 – Construction of Disneyland commences in Anaheim, California.

1956 – MGM releases film “High Society,” a musical re-working of “The Philadelphia Story” set in Newport, Rhode Island and starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra, with songs by Cole Porter.

1961 – John Chancellor becomes news anchor of “Today Show.”

1968 – The Beatles’ animated film “Yellow Submarine” premieres in London.

1975 – Apollo 18 and Soyuz 19 make first US/USSR linkup in space.

1978 – New York Yankees manager Billy Martin and outfielder Reggie Jackson fight in the dug-out after Jackson refuses to bunt, causing Martin to suspend him.

1981 – Lobby walkways at Kansas City’s Hyatt Regency hotel collapse, killing 114 people and injuring over 200.

1988 – Florence Griffith Joyner of the United States sets 100 meter women’s record at 10.49 seconds.

1995 – Forbes Magazine announces Bill Gates is the richest man in the world with a net worth of $12.9 billion.

2005 – 13th ESPY Awards: Lance Armstrong, Annika Sorenstam win.

2013 – 21st ESPY Awards: LeBron James, Serena Williams win.

2018 – Bloomberg estimates the National Football League made $14 billion in revenue in 2017, distributing a record $8.1 billion to the league’s 32 teams or $255 million each.

2023 – Russia pulls out of a deal allowing the export of Ukrainian grain past their naval blockade, threatening to push world food prices higher.
