This Day In History1800 – John Adams becomes the first President to live in the White House.

1859 – The current Cape Lookout, North Carolina, lighthouse was lit for the first time. Its first-order Fresnel lens can be seen for about 19 miles in good conditions.

1870 – US Weather Bureau begins operations (24 locations)

1915 – Parris Island in South Carolina is officially designated a US Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

1924 – Boston Bruins officially join the NHL, becoming the first United States-based team to enter the league. Montreal Maroons also join NHL, but only last until 1938.

1931 – Dupont introduces synthetic rubber.

1938 – National League batting champion Ernie Lombardi of the Cincinnati Reds is named Most Valuable Player. He is the first catcher to win award. Boston Red Sox first baseman Jimmie Foxx takes American League award.

1941 – Japanese naval staff officers Suzuki & Maejima arrive at Pearl Harbor.

1950 – 82 degrees F, highest temperature ever recorded in Cleveland in November.

1953 – Herb Thomas, driving his own No. 92 Hudson Hornet, wraps up the NASCAR Grand National Championship with 14th place in a 100-mile finale at Atlanta’s Lakewood Speedway. Thomas is the first repeat champion of the series.

1956 – Nobel for Physics awarded to William Shockley, Walter H. Brattain and John Bardeen.

1964 – Cleveland running back Jim Brown runs for 149 yards in Browns’ 30-17 win at Pittsburgh to become the first NFL player to exceed 10,000 yards career rushing.

1966 – Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax becomes first 3-time winner of Cy Young Award, unanimous winner for 2nd straight year. It’s the final year only 1 award given for pitchers in both leagues.

1967 – “Cool Hand Luke”, starring Paul Newman, George Kennedy, and Strother Martin, is released.

1977 – President Jimmy Carter raises the minimum wage from $2.30 to $3.35 an hour, effective from January 1, 1981.

1990 – Rhetoric escalates as George Bush likens Saddam Hussein to Adolph Hitler.

1997 – North Carolina State wide receiver Torry Holt catches 5 touchdown passes in a 48-35 loss to Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee.

2003 – Arkansas beats Kentucky 71-63 in 7 overtimes at Commonwealth Stadium, Lexington. The game ties NCAA record for longest game in college football history.

2009 – Tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams clash in the season-ending WTA Championship decider at Doha, Qatar: Serena wins 6-2, 7-6.

2018 – Google employees stage mass walkout to protest company’s handling of sexual harassment.

2022 – World Series: Philadelphia Phillies match 1967 Boston Red Sox with 5 home runs in 7-0 win over Houston Astros to take 2-1 lead in series at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
