1798 – First bank robbery in the US: Bank of Pennsylvania robbed of $162,821 at Carpenter’s Hall, Philadelphia.

1898 – “McCall” magazine first published.

1901 – Vice President Theodore Roosevelt advises “Speak softly & carry a big stick”

1914 – The US Treasury Department establishes the Bureau of War Risk insurance to provide up to $5 million worth of insurance for merchant ships and their crews.

1929 – Unilever formed by merger of Margarine Union & Lever Bros.

1935 – Labor Day hurricane makes landfall in Florida, killing 423 people, the strongest and most intense hurricane to make landfall in the United States.

1940 – Great Smoky Mountains National Park dedicated.

1945 – V-J Day, formal surrender of Japan aboard USS Missouri, marks the end of World War II (Japanese date, 1st September in US)

1954 – WTVD-TV channel 11 in Raleigh-Durham, NC (ABC) begins broadcasting.

1958 – U.S. Air Force C-130A-II is shot down by fighters over Yerevan, Armenia when it strays into Soviet airspace while conducting a mission. All crew lost.

1962 – St. Louis first baseman Stan Musial records his 3,516th hit in Cardinals’ 4-3 loss to the New York Mets. Musial overtakes Tris Speaker into second place behind Ty Cobb on Major League Baseball’s all-time list.

1968 – Ralph Houk signs 3-year contract to manage New York Yankees at $65,000 a season, then the biggest managerial salary in MLB.

1974 – PGA Tournament Players Championship, Atlanta CC: Jack Nicklaus wins inaugural event by 2 strokes ahead of runner-up J.C. Snead. It was the first of his 3 TPC titles.

1985 – Jerry Lewis’ 20th Muscular Dystrophy telethon raises $33.1 million.

1987 – Donald Trump takes out a full page New York TImes ad lambasting Japan.

1998 – SwissAir Flight 111 crashes near Peggys Cove, Nova Scotia. All 229 people on board are killed.

2015 – Earth’s trees number just over 3 trillion according to a study in “Nature” by Thomas Crowther of Yale University.

2019 – Diving boat catches fire at night killing 34 people who were asleep on board off Santa Cruz Island, California.

2021 – At least 43 people die as remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the Northeast with record rains, tornadoes and flooding with New York and New Jersey declaring state of emergency.
