RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department’s weekly newscast.
Rail Safety Improvement Project in Waxhaw
The N.C. Department of Transportation, Union County, and CSX officials are celebrating the beginning of a rail safety improvement project in Waxhaw.
The project includes construction of 2,500 feet of additional railroad track to meet project demands of more freight trains along the CSX corridor.
The new track will allow freight trains to pass one another more efficiently relieving local roadway congestion.
The project also includes the construction of a new bridge on Helms Road over the railroad tracks. The new bridge will improve safety by eliminating the potential for vehicle and train collisions and provide a reliable connection for vehicles crossing the rail corridor.
NC Harvest Season
The harvest season is in full swing in North Carolina, which means agricultural producers and motorists sharing state roads.
Motorists are encouraged to practice safe, responsible driving when encountering farm equipment. Don’t assume that operators can see you.
Halloween Safety
Booze It & Lose It continues to create increase awareness of the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.
The Governor’s Highway Safety Program campaign sees law enforcement agencies increase the number of patrols and officers in an area. Running through October 31st, the campaign sets up checking stations and uses local news media to reach out to drivers.
Stay safe this spooky season if you’re a pedestrian or a motorist.
When crossing the street, don’t forget to cross at designated cross walks when available.
Parents, make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick, or reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to motorists.
Motorists are encouraged to drive slowly through residential streets and areas where people could be walking.
