A reminder, filing for the March 15th primary election, ends at noontime Monday.  The local Board of Elections has been very quiet since the first couple of filing days.  Locally, Board of Commissioners and Board of Education, NC House and NC Senate seats, US House and US Senate and President are possibilities.  There are others, but those listed are among the most notables.

Board of Commissioners are the governing board for a $51,105,322 budget.  Hard to image a county the size of Bladen spends nearly a million dollars a week.  That number includes local, state and federal funds that flow threw the various county agencies.

Speaking of taxes, ad valorem (property taxes) were due September 1, however a penalty is applied on January 6, 2016.  In short, you pay more if you procrastinate beyond the deadline.

There has been a surprising ‘silence’ to an 8 cent tax increase to balance the Bladen County budget approved effective July 1, 2015.

I enjoy local history.  In 1790, the population of the county was 5,084.  A hundred years later,  1890 the population was 16,763, and in 2000, 110 years later the population was 32,278.  I found a couple of numbers for 2014, both in the 35,000 range.  The 2019 projected population for Bladen is 36,120.  A huge county with a few folks.  You know 55 North Carolina counties were originally formed from Bladen.

Interesting weather forecast today….rain and wind with temps dropping throughout the day, expected to be near 32 degrees tonight with high winds, gusts as high as 23 mph.

Dear Santa, I can explain.

Christmas isn’t about how big the tree is, or what’s under it.  It’s about who’s around it.

There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.  Mandy Hale.
