Didn’t it rain, children, didn’t it rain? … remember the tune from years ago. I realize in a thunderstorm amounts of rainfall vary greatly. Yesterday, from about 5:20 p.m. to around 7 p.m., at the Hester household southwest of Elizabethtown, we recorded nearly 2½ inches of rain, that included a small amount of hail. At the Curtis Brown Airport … basically same time frame, just over an inch.

Rain washed out the final Summer Sound concert at Elizabethtown Farmers Market featuring Jim Quick and the Coastline Band … and a sad farewell to longtime chamber executive Dawn Maynard. She announced her retirement several months ago. Dawn has done a great job for years. She will be missed and can now enjoy the beach and family and whatever else she chooses to do.

High School football tonight. Wallace Rose Hill in town for a game with East Bladen (7:30 p.m.) and West Bladen will entertain South Brunswick in a 7 p.m. game. Check results of all Bladen County sports events on our Sport Page.

Former West Bladen football coach Russell Dove, now at South Columbus, has been selected as an assistant coach for the East team in the 2020 NC Coaches Association East West football game. Dove is a Bladen County native.

Carolina Panthers lost to New England Patriots 10-3 in last night’s preseason game, played in Foxboro, Mass. Cam Newton saw limited action, after suffering a foot injury. The Panthers are 1-2 in preseason play.

And how ’bout the Oakland Raiders/Green Bay Packers game played in Canada? They played on an 80 yard field due to a Canadian League goalpost issue. Raiders 22, Green Bay 21.
