What if you were 18 years old, just out of high school and planning your future, where would you begin? Or maybe 21 or 22, a high school grad and on the verge of completing college? What next?
I think of that from time to time … Think about the youngster working in a family business and not particularly interested in being in that line of work … what next?
So much has changed in our lifetime … new opportunities…
In the late 40s, early 50s … maybe be a horse-trader … or own a small business, maybe retail, maybe farming … construction … medical … any number of opportunities…
Today, maybe an engineer, or an investment consultant … I guess I am a dreamer, but there are so many different types of opportunities … I stumbled into a good situation, after a few years doing what I thought I wanted to do … Loved it, but realized there is a big world, so many opportunities … and later as a parent, how do you assist your high schooler or college grad?…
I remember having ‘crazy ideas’ … A professional baseball player, or a gospel music singer, or a farmer, or a DJ?
I’m not in either category, today … I just wanted to be successful at something … and be able to support a family, if I was fortunate enough to have one … I am fortunate … married a nurse, #1 child wanted to play baseball … tried it, didn’t work out … but he had a good education … and it worked out fine … #2 graduated from high school … no interest in going on to college … stumbled a little … decided he wanted to try driving an 18-wheeler … 30-plus years later … It was a good choice for him…
Today, it is a different world … so many opportunities … opportunities I or they could have never dreamed of…
I know, a little off the usual track…
Had a friend tell me recently one of his sons had always wanted to work on automobiles … Great, just be the best you can be…
