Today is Victory over Japan Day or simply V-J Day. In the United States, this day marks the date when the news broke in 1945 that the Government of Japan had surrendered bringing World War II to an end. The same occasion is marked in Europe on August 15th.

President Harry S. Truman announced the news to the world at the White House on August 14th 1945. The actual peace treaty was not signed until Sept. 2, 1945.  The formal surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan.

In 1946, President Truman signed a proclamation a naming August 14, 1946 as Victory over Japan Day.  The sate of Rhode Island is the only state to officially dedicate the second Monday in August as a state holiday to mark the occasion.  Parades are held in many communities across the United States including Indiana, Kansas and Connecticut.

Bladen Online thanks all of our veterans who fought so bravely in World War II and all other conflicts.
