Bladen County Fire Marshal, Kenneth Clark, confirmed disaster struck two Bladen County families. Yesterday, November 30, 2020, a family of four living on Mote Road in Bladen County lost their home and their family pet to a fire. On Thanksgiving morning, a different family living in Clarkton lost a vehicle and their home due to a fire.

The first home fire started due to a vehicle fire on Thanksgiving morning around 5 a.m., according to Fire Marshal Clark. The fire started with the vehicle and then consumed the home. According to the official report, the family lost all their belongings and their vehicle, but no one was injured.

Crystal Edwards organized a GoFundMe page for her family. In the post, she explained the situation, “Eleanor (Dickie) & David Callahan were asleep Thanksgiving morning around 5 a.m. and awakened by a neighbor who thankfully saw the flames. The house was a total loss, and they lost everything in the fire.”

According to Ms. Edwards’ report, her mother, Eleanor, is 78 years old. The other resident of the home, David, is a home dialysis patient who will have to travel for treatments since the home fire.

Ms. Edwards added a comment to the fundraiser today, “We can’t thank you enough for the love and support that has been shown. Mama is with me and David is with Colby. As the shock wears off, the reality hits of the magnitude of what was lost and what we are facing. Thank you so much for the contributions and mostly the prayers.”

She continued, “This family needs your help. No amount is too small.”

She added, “I am sad to report that their dog Nala did not survive the fire.”

Donations for the Mathis family are being collected on the GoFundMe site and at some local businesses in Elizabethtown and White Lake.
