A vehicle that was reported to have been in the Cape Fear River in Tar Heel over the weekend has not been removed from the river as of Monday afternoon. The vehicle was located late Friday using sonar.

Bladen County Fire Marshal Kenneth Clark said, “The river rose (during the weekend) and it’s on hold.”

He said rains on Saturday and Sunday caused the rise in the river level and divers ceased their operations to retrieve the vehicle. Clark said once the river levels drop, divers will attempt once more to retrieve the vehicle.

On Friday afternoon two fisherman found a set of tire tracks on the river bank leading into the river near the bridge in Tar Heel and called 911.

Emergency Management officials believe the vehicle may have been stolen.
