A staff report

At 91 years old, Gloria was no stranger to life’s challenges. As a widow living independently, she had weathered many storms on her own. But when she wasn’t feeling quite right one day, she made the brave decision to drive herself to the hospital—a decision that would change the course of her journey.

Diagnosed with congestive heart failure, Gloria faced an uncertain prognosis. Doctors discussed hospice care, but Gloria, with her remarkable resilience, remained unfazed. Having navigated adversity throughout her life as a Jewish woman, she turned to art as a means of processing emotions and combating discrimination. Her journey led her to become a civil rights activist, embodying courage and determination in the face of injustice.

With her health declining, Gloria’s son Corey made the selfless decision to move to Wilmington to care for her full-time. However, Gloria’s home lacked accessibility, presenting a significant challenge. Desperate for assistance, Corey reached out to the New Hanover Senior Resource Center, who connected him with WARM NC.

On a poignant day, as Corey and Gloria shared a prayer on Yom Kippur, a knock on the door heralded the arrival of WARM NC, ready to measure the home for a much-needed ramp. This serendipitous moment marked the beginning of a renewed sense of hope and possibility for Gloria and Corey.

Four years later, Gloria continues to defy the odds, embracing life with her son in their accessible home. Corey expresses profound gratitude to WARM NC for their invaluable support, acknowledging the role they played in extending his mother’s life.
