A fire call went out the morning of Friday, May 26th on a report of smoke coming from the White’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church parsonage located at 6111 Mercer Mill Road in Clarkton. The call was responded to by fire departments from Lisbon, Bladenboro, Clarkton, Elizabethtown as well as the Bladen County Fire Marshals Office and Bladen County Emergency Services.
Mrs. Howell said she, their toddler daughter and puppy were all home when smoke started to fill the house. She immediately left the house and a call for help was made.
Bladen County Fire Marshal Bradley Kinlaw said the smoke was coming from their heating and air conditioning unit. Daine Smith with Cape Fear Heating & Cooling was on the scene.
Smith said, “The smoke was due to the indoor motor being electrically shorted, thus causing the motor to burn internally.”
Mr. Howell reported the home’s HVAC unit had not been cooling properly for a couple of weeks. According to Smith servicing the unit would not have prevented the motor from burning.
“It’s not common or likely, but it does happen. They’re designed to fail in a manner such that this doesn’t happen,” Smith said about the motor burn.
According to Kinlaw there was no fire in the unit only smoke, but some smoke did enter the home. “They will have to was their clothes,” Kinlaw said, but no real smoke damage was done to the residence.”
Mrs. Howell said she, their daughter and dog were all fine with no injuries.
