We all have a common ancestor (mother, father, grandfather…) who is the one that correlates us to the other members of our family. The consanguineous characteristic refers to the grade of kinship that exists between the descendants of a parent or common ancestor.
Consanguineous degrees, also called consanguinity, bear on to the relationship that exists between the different generations of a family. For example, for us to have a consanguineous relationship with our siblings, our parents must be the common ancestor of both. Thus, consanguineous characteristics constitute a blood bond that determines the relationship between relatives.
The consanguineous relationship between two people is identified through blood ties and their closeness. Usually, siblings are our most direct blood relatives. However, consanguineous relations extend from children to parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, and endlessness. On the other hand, non-blood or non-consanguineous relatives are those related to us by a legal bond, such as marriage or adoption, but not by a blood bond; that is, they do not share the blood of a common relative or ancestor.
According to the word’s etymology, consanguineous essentially derives from the Latin noun sanguis. In its earliest meaning, the word sanguis stood for “blood.” As follows, consanguineous relationships are established based on blood bonds degrees. The word consanguineous serves as a qualification or adjective. Further, this term incorporates five syllables (con-san-guin-e-ous), and its valid pronunciation is kon-sang-gwin-ee-us. Here are some examples of the use of the word:
- The dispute to know who was right causes hatred between consanguineous relatives.
- The consanguineous degree between the parties is estimated to be within a margin of 99.99%.
- Several studies suggest that ancient tribes used to group based on their consanguineous ties.
- The relationship between my sister and I is due to consanguineous reasons.
- The doctor explained that the third grandson in a family has a fourth-degree consanguineous relationship with his ancestor.

Todos tenemos un ancestro común (madre, padre, abuelo…) que es el que nos correlaciona con los demás miembros de nuestra familia. La característica consanguínea se refiere al grado de parentesco que hay entre los descendientes de un padre o antepasado común.
Los grados consanguíneos, también llamados consanguinidad, inciden en la relación que existe entre las distintas generaciones de una familia. Por ejemplo, para que tengamos una relación consanguínea con nuestros hermanos, nuestros padres deben ser el ancestro común de ambos. Así, las características consanguíneas constituyen un vínculo de sangre que determina la relación entre los parientes.
La relación consanguínea entre dos personas se identifica a través de los lazos de sangre y su cercanía. Por lo general, los hermanos son nuestros parientes consanguíneos más directos. Sin embargo, las relaciones consanguíneas se extienden de hijos a padres, abuelos, bisabuelos, tatarabuelos y un sin fin. Por otro lado, los parientes no consanguíneos son aquellos que se relacionan con nosotros por vínculo legal, como matrimonio o adopción, pero no por vínculo de sangre; es decir, que no comparten la sangre de un pariente o antepasado común.
Según la etimología de la palabra, consanguíneo deriva esencialmente del sustantivo latino sanguis. En su significado más antiguo, la palabra sanguis significaba “sangre.” De esta forma, las relaciones consanguíneas se establecen en función de los grados de lazos de sangre. La palabra consanguíneo sirve como calificación o adjetivo. Además, este término incorpora cinco sílabas (con-san-guin-e-ous). Los siguientes son algunos ejemplos del uso de la palabra:
