As the snow melts and everyone returns to work, school, and normal routines, Bladen County Emergency Services Director Nathan Dowless has given an update from the weekend’s winter weather.

Dowless shared that parts of the county had up to a quarter-of-an-inch of ice, and up to four inches of snow. Prior to the winter storm NCDOT, Governor Cooper, and the County of Bladen warned of dangerous roads, potential power outages, and other hazards that the storm may bring.

On Saturday, NCDOT said, “Nearly 2,000 NCDOT forces and contractors have been working through the night and are back at it Saturday treating roads blanketed by snow and ice in the eastern two-thirds of North Carolina. Crews had more than 1,100 trucks and graders applying salt and sand and plowing roads. By 10 a.m. Saturday, crews working to de-ice roads had applied about 1 million gallons of brine, 21,000 tons of salt, and 1,400 tons of a salt and sand mixture.”

Emergency Services Director Nathan Dowless stated, “We had one major wreck on the bridge on Tar Heel Ferry Road with 5 cars involved. No one was seriously hurt.” In regards to power, the largest power outage occurred in the Dublin area, with approximately three hundred outages, according to Dowless.

Although conditions have improved, continue to drive cautiously. Winter is not over, so continue to be prepared. Have food, batteries, flashlights, medications, and other necessities on-hand in case of an emergency. Proactivity is the best way to ensure safety.
