A Staff Report

The National Weather Service of Wilmington stated on their Facebook post, “Dangerous heat is expected again today. An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for all areas for peak heat indices above 110° this afternoon.”

Below are some important safety tips to keep in mind during excessive heat conditions:

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Avoid excessive amounts of caffeine and alcohol as they can contribute to dehydration.

2. Stay Indoors: If possible, stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Use air conditioning or fans to help cool down.

3. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.

4. Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

5. Limit Outdoor Activities: If you must be outdoors, try to limit physical activities to the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

6. Cooling Measures: Take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature. Use damp cloths to wipe down and cool your skin.

7. Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on the elderly, young children, and those with medical conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

8. Never Leave People or Pets in Vehicles: Temperatures inside a car can become dangerously high within minutes, even with windows cracked open.

9. Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness: Be aware of symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, confusion, rapid pulse, and heavy sweating. If someone is experiencing these symptoms, move them to a cooler place, provide water, and seek medical attention if necessary.

10. Stay Informed: Monitor local weather updates and follow the guidance of local authorities. Visit weather.gov/safety/heat for more detailed heat safety information.

Remember, staying safe during extreme heat is crucial.
