amerdogtickgroupProtect yourself and your pets with these top tick tips.

1.  Ticks come in small, medium and large sizes.

2.  Ticks crawl up.  They live on the ground and migrate upward.

3.  Cold and snowy? No big deal.  Yup, winter does NOT bother certain tick species.  Deer ticks become active every year after the FIRST frost.

4.  Ticks carry disease-causing mircrobes.  There has been a geographic shift of lyme disease in North Carolina.  (AVMA)

5.  If you, or your dog, cat, horse are bitten, you probably won’t know it.  “This is super creepy, but tick bites are painless” because tick’s saliva has anesthetic properties and HOSTS, like you and your pets, don’t feel it.

6.  The easiest way to remove a tick is with pointed tweezers.

Ticks are like germ filled balloons.  Grab it close to the skin and remove as if it were a splinter.

7.  Tick bites and tick-borne diseases can be 100% preventable.

Take steps to protect yourself with the proper clothing, or spraying a tick repellant. Protect your pets with year-round preventive medication and regular tick checks at home or at Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital .  Also a lyme vaccine can help your pets.

Remember, one bite is all it takes to make you or your pet sick-so prevention is your best answer!
