Commissioners-MeetingElizabethtown Dixie Youth Baseball League President Mark Gillespie has been named Assistant State Director for North Carolina Dixie Youth Baseball.

“I was surprised,” said Gillespie about getting the call from North Carolina State Director Carey Wrenn. “I had no idea this was coming.”

Gillespie, an Elizabethtown native, has been heavily involved serving the youth of the community in both Dixie Youth Baseball and in Boy Scouts for most of his adult life  “I don’t remember exactly when I became league president, around 1992 I think,” he said.

Scouting has also been a big part of Gillespie’s life. He earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1985 and became a scoutmaster in 1992.

Gillespie who served four years on the Bladen County Board of Commissioners, has managed the Elizabethtown ABC store since 2003 after working in the store for 14 years prior to that as a clerk.

One of Gillespie’s first official duties as Assistant State Director will be helping with the Majors State Tournament in Cerro Gordo on July 18-25. “I will find out the rest of the job as I get into it,” he said.
