The new Elizabethtown Fire and Rescue Facility is taking shape. The local General Contractor on the project is DeVane Builders.
“Significant progress is taking place on the new Elizabethtown Fire and Rescue facility. The previous rescue squad building was destroyed by Hurricane Mathew in 2016,” Eddie Madden, Town of Elizabethtown Manager said recently. He added, “Funding is provided by the NC Golden Leaf Foundation and the Town of Elizabethtown.”
January 1, 2020 is the date Mr. Madden gave for substantial completion.

The Golden Leaf Foundation is providing $2,518,950.00 with the Hurricane Matthew Disaster Recovery Grant Program.
The Town identified the new site at 300 East Broad Street, formerly the location of Jessup Motors. The new downtown area is large enough to accommodate the Volunteer Rescue Squad and Elizabethtown Fire Department. This co-location is expected to result in better service to the town and surrounding unincorporated areas, according to officials. Town funds were used to acquire the site. Eugene Anderson is sold the property to the town at less than fair market value, according to a past press release. The Golden LEAF grant is supporting the design, engineering, and renovation of the new station.
The future plans for the current fire station on Swanzy Street calls for the Public Works Department to move into that space and utilize it for office and shop space. The current Public Works building on Swanzy Street is proposed to function as a garage.
Nothing is proposed to be built on the lot of the former Elizabethtown Rescue Squad building on Mercer Mill Road due to the potential of flooding.
