Bladen County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Robert Taylor addressed some questions today about grades, graduation, and teacher’s pay.

The North Carolina State Board of Education has sent out a grading mechanism that allows students to still be able to move to the next grade. The system allows students to choose a pass, fail, or withdraw from the course grading component or a letter grade that will calculate into their grade point average, according to Dr. Taylor.

“Students and parents will determine which route they will take,” Taylor said.

Teachers have been requested to continue to distribute a certain length of work given the specific grade level with a maximum of 45 minutes of work for a high school course, Taylor explained, The distant learning work will be graded, but not in the traditional sense.

He said, “There is no way we can grade students with remote learning as we did when they were in the classroom, face to face.”

Due to the North Carolina Stay at Home Order traditional high school graduations are in question. Dr. Taylor said the high school graduations are the largest events the schools’ host and at this time it is not certain how graduations will be conducted.

May 5th the Bladen County Schools District will announce their plans for this year’s high schools’ graduation ceremonies.

In closing, Dr. Taylor confirmed no Bladen County Schools staff members or teachers have been furloughed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
