Word of the Day: Ovation
Spread the love

By Danna Martínez

There are multiple ways to show admiration and respect; one of them is the ovation.

The term ovation comes from the Latin word ovatio. In old Latin, “ovatio” refers to a small triumph. Long ago, ovations were granted to the Romans after finishing the battles. To be worthy of admiration such as an ovation, the Roman warriors must have declared victory without shedding blood. Even though the standing ovation has a significant meaning, the standing ovation was only awarded to small triumphs back then.

Today, the standing ovation is an act of appreciation worldwide. However, the standing ovation is awarded only to specific people who have demonstrated and managed to amaze people with their excellence in a particular area. The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, held this year, gives us a great example of the meaning of the standing ovation. According to CBSNews, gymnast Oksana Chusovitina, who competed in the Olympics this year, received a standing ovation. Gymnast Chusovitina managed to impress the public with her skills in the sport in what she said would be the last of her Olympics. Like this athlete, there are multiple talents and stories of effort around the world that have been or are waiting to be recognized.

We all have the chance to receive a standing ovation. However, gaining acclaim is not an easy job. In some cases, it takes a lifetime to win public admiration. Some characters like Charlie Chaplin, Michael Jordan, and Placido Domingo have obtained some of the most significant ovations. Effort and hard work have resulted in these characters being supported by miles of fans.

The standing ovation is a demonstration of appreciation and admiration not demanded towards a person. For a standing ovation to be valuable, a public proclamation must show approval and support. Loud clapping and sustained loud cheers are some ways to cheer for a person. Generally, crowds use ovations to show that they agree with a person, appreciate them, or want them to continue with what they are doing.

These days, the stages of sports, theater, and the world of entertainment are some of the most recognized accreditors of ovations. Ovations are an honor for those who receive them and power for those who carry them out. In addition to showing appreciation for someone, giving a standing ovation is a particular and significant show of support and endorsement.
