Spring hasn’t yet sprung,
Fall has done fell,
It’s still a bit too chilly,
Let’s play outside, what the … heck.
As sure as day follows night, your left foot follows your right and the checkout line you’re in is always the slowest, the beginning of the high school spring sports season means chilly temperatures. Heck, sometimes downright uncomfortable temperatures.
The high school spring sports season is scheduled to start Monday with the West Bladen baseball and softball teams playing at East Columbus. Wednesday, the East Bladen baseball team is scheduled to play South Columbus at Russell Priest Field.
Sure enough, only days after high temperatures were in the 80s and lows were in the mid 60s, Monday’s high is forecast to be 60 degrees and the low will be 35. Tuesday, the expected high will be 66 and the low will be 40.
It’s forecast to warm up later in the week, but nighttime temperatures are expected to be in the mid 40s.

As the parent of a former spring sports athlete, I don’t miss watching early-season games bundled up like I’m watching the first round of the football playoffs while trying to get feeling in my fingers and toes.
But, it’s spring sports season. Bundle up, grab a hot chocolate — or two — and enjoy. It will warm up in a couple weeks.
• The South Columbus at East Bladen softball and girls’ soccer games scheduled Tuesday have been postponed because of the East Bladen girls’ basketball team’s game at St. Pauls in the fourth round of the state playoffs.
• East Bladen graduate Kayleigh Raynor is batting .385 (15-for-39) with 11 runs scored and five runs batted in through 11 games with the Methodist University softball team. The college freshman plays right field for the Monarchs, who are 5-6.
MONDAY’S PICK TO CLICK
North Carolina’s backcourt of Caleb Love and R.J. Davis to combine for 33 points, four 3-pointers and nine assists against Syracuse as the Tar Heels close out their home schedule.
SUNDAY’S PICK: Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch were the picks in the NASCAR Cup series race in Fontana, California. Results: Larson won the race. Busch, who had won the race four times in the past, was never a factor and finished 14th.
