By Erin Smith The town of Elizabethtown is gearing up to welcome cycling enthusiasts, for the inaugural Grape Escape Metric Half Century and Metric Century cycling event, planned for Sunday, August 26th. Registration begins at 11 AM at Cape Fear Vineyard and Winery and costs $45 to enter. The ride begins at 1 PM. Town Manager, Eddie Madden, said the bike ride is a fundraiser for the Town of Elizabethtown Grape Escape Scholarship at Bladen Community College. BLADENBORO – John Ammons has been named the head baseball coach at West Bladen High School replacing Kim Cain who resigned to take a position in South Carolina. Ammons has served as an assistant coach under Cain for six years and has also served as an assistant football coach at West Bladen. “I am excited,” said Ammons. “There is a great group of young’uns here. Kayla Thompson, former West Bladen and UNCW golfer will leave Saturday, August 18 for California to attempt to qualify for the Ladies Professional Golfing Association. The qualifying tourney will be held August 20-26 at Mission Hills C.C. (Dinah and Palmer courses) in Rancho Mirage and the Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Palm Desert. East Bladen’s soccer program played a key role in the Powerade State Games at UNC-Greensboro this summer. East Bladen Coach Jay Raynor served as site coordinator and basically ran the event on the site. Eagle assistant coach Joe Melvin was the public address announcer for the weekend. West Bladen’s Knights opened their 2018 official football practice schedule Monday morning with 34 players on hand, but Coach Kris Williams said that additional players will be welcome. “We had 3 or 4 players missing that spoke with me previously,” said Coach Kris Williams. “We are still taking kids, so if they want to come out to practice, we would like to have them.” Williams went on to say that everything went well overall. East Bladen football had good numbers for both varsity and jayvee Monday evening for the first day of official football practice. “Practice went good,” said Coach Robby Priest. “We were able to get outside despite the rain.” Assistant Coach Terry Smith noted that the Eagles had 31 varsity players and 23 jayvees that were able to practice and a few more who didn’t have their physicals yet. “It was nice and cool,” said Coach Smith. Galeed’s Women won the Lumber River Church Softball League’s regular-season and tournament championship finishing the season with a 19-1 overall record. Galeed outscored their opponents by a 323-90 margin losing only to Antioch in regular-season play. Cade Hancock, Jr. of Elizabethtown, NC was tied for 30th place after 2 rounds of play in the IMG Junior World Championship in California. The tournament continues through Friday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Hancock is participating in the 15-18 year old category. He posted rounds of 72 and 75 for a 2 round total of 147, 3 over par. The leader after the first 2 days of play was Nathan Petronzio of Bee Cave, Texas, at 5 under par.
