Things have been rocking at Vineyard Golf at White Lake. There has been activities aplenty at Vineyard Golf this week. On Monday a group of about 70 players from a Fayetteville senior organization played the course. On Tuesday the Southeastern Fellowship of Senior Golfers, about 70 in all, played and on Saturday, September 23 there will be a tournament with over 100 players participating. Vineyard Golf’s Third Anniversary Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, October 7 (rain date Oct. 9) with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. This event will be a four man Captain’s Choice. East Bladen High School unveiled banners at Lenon Fisher Stadium Friday that honor two of their biggest stars, Desmond Bryant and Kevin Richardson. Bryant, a defensive tackle, went on to play college football at Harvard then played pro football with the Oakland Raiders from 2009-2012 and with the Cleveland Browns from 2013-2016. Bryant has made 238 career tackles in the NFL with 26 sacks and forced 4 fumbles. He is currently a free agent. Richardson was the starting running back for Appalachian State teams that won 3 straight FCS national championships from 2005-2007. RICHMOND, VA – East Bladen grad Farrell Murchison rushed for 77 yards on 12 carries Saturday night as his Winston-Salem State Rams defeated Virginia Union University 21-20. Murchison broke free for a 16-yard gain to the Virginia Union 5 yard line in the first quarter that set up teammate Rod Tinsley’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Darren Dowdell two plays later. West Bladen junior Conner Brisson has verbally committed to join Lady Knight teammate Carley Dawson in continuing her softball and academic career at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Brisson has started at shortstop for the last 2 years for the Lady Knights. West Bladen compiled a 35-13 record in those 2 seasons and in 2017 the Lady Knights captured the Four County Conference championship with a 13-1 league record and 20-4 overall mark. Clarkton’s Kayla Thompson paced the UNCW Lady Seahawks to a second place finish this past weekend at the William and Mary Golf Invitational. Thompson, a senior at UNCW, shot rounds of 75-71-75=221 to tie for fourth place among 55 lady golfers. Penn State University won the tourney with a total of 888 strokes while UNCW had 890 strokes. A series of public meetings has been scheduled to discuss the creation of a new State Park along the Black River including sections which pass through Bladen County. The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation (Division) is undertaking a feasibility study to determine if a State Park should be established along the Black River at the request of the State Legislature. The Thundering Herd Finale Tourney is scheduled for Saturday, September 9th, with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. The finale will be an 18 hole event with a light meal available. The cost will be $40 for members and $45 for guests. The finale will not actually be the end of the Thundering Herd. The Mini Campers who attended the East Bladen Summer Cheer Camp are invited to cheer with the East Bladen Varsity Cheerleaders at the Home Football game Monday night. Mini Eagles will perform during halftime and should meet at the gate to go on the field near the end of the second quarter. Campers are to wear their camp tee-shirt which will allow them free admission into the game. Parents admission is $6. ”We look forward to seeing our campers to help us cheer on the Eagles!” said Brandy Wilkins, East Bladen cheerleading sponsor. T. J. Smith who started at defensive end for Arkansas Saturday in the Razorbacks 49-7 victory over Florida A&M is the grandson of Bladenboro’s Eltroy Smith. T. J. Smith, a 6-3 290-pound sophmore, had 2 tackles in Saturday’s game. He helped lead Colquitt County to a 15-0 record and the Georgia Class 6A state title in his senior year of high school. T. J. is also a cousin of Trelonnie Owens who led Bladenboro to the State 1A Basketball championship in 1990 and was All-ACC Basketball at Wake Forest. Share:

PEMBROKE – East Bladen grad Farrell Murchison rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown Thursday as his Winston-Salem State Rams opened their football season with a 34-31 victory over UNC-Pembroke. Murchison capped WSSU’s second touchdown drive with consecutive runs of 9 yards, one yard and then 3 yards for his touchdown that stretched the Ram lead to 14-0 after Daniel Rivera’s extra point kick with 5:42 left in the first quarter. The Elizabethtown native reeled off runs of 10 yards and 7 yards on the Rams third possession that ended with a missed field goal attempt. Former East Bladen star Farrell Murchison will be on the field Thursday with his Winston-Salem State Rams when they open their 2017 football season at 3 p.m. at UNC-Pembroke. Murchison, the all-time leading rusher in East Bladen school history, is listed No. 2 on the Rams depth chart at running back. In his senior year at East Bladen, Murchison rushed for 2,491 yards and 37 touchdowns. Last year Murchison led Louisburg to a 9-0 record by rushing for 947 yards and ten touchdowns. The Rams begin the season ranked No. 8 in Sheridan’s HCBU poll. UNC-Pembroke is ranked No. 19 in the American Football Coaches Division II poll. Share:
West Bladen’s B. J. Drake has been recognized as a ‘Athlete of the Week’ by the Fayetteville Observer for his performance in the Knights season-opening 39-36 win over South Brunswick. Drake, a senior, rushed for a whopping 238 yards and scored on touchdown runs of 61, 66 and 19 yards. “B. Heustess knocked in a rebound off of a corner kick from 4 yards out in the 25th minute for the first goal of the game. In the 27th minute Heustess sent a long pass to midfield to senior Brooks McGill.
