Another chilly day on the first day of spring and another overnight freeze warning for Bladen County and surrounding areas.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for early Tuesday morning as sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected along portions of southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina from 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Outdoor pets and livestock susceptible to the cold may need access to covered or insulated shelters.
A free warning is issued when significant, widespread freezing temperatures are expected. A freeze watch is issued when there is a potential for significant, widespread freezing temperatures within the next 24-36 hours and plants and crops may be damaged.
The weather alert recommends to take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
