1893 – Katharine Lee Bates writes “America the Beautiful” in Colorado.

1918 – Lightning kills 504 sheep in Utah’s Wasatch National Park.

1922 – Cardinals enter first place in the National League, marking the first time both St. Louis baseball teams are on top with the Browns leading the American League.

1926 – A state-record 108 degrees in Troy, New York.

1933 – Wiley Post completes the first solo flight around the world in 7 days and 19 hours.

1939 – Jane Bolin becomes the first African-American female judge in New York.

1942 – Gasoline rationing using coupons begins in the United States because of World War II.

1954 – US Virgin Islands adopt constitution known as the Revised Organic Act.

1955 – Richard Nixon becomes the first vice president to preside over a cabinet meeting.

2017 – 10 people die in an overheated tractor in San Antonio, Texas in a human trafficking incident.

2019 – President Donald Trump says the United States could win the war in Afghanistan in a week. “I just don’t want to kill 10 million people. If I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the earth.”
